CAPIZ

Capiz, the shell of the Placuna Placenta mollusc, has shaped the material language of traditional Filipino architecture and decorative arts for centuries. The flat, iridescent, and translucent properties of the shell have predominantly been used as alternatives to glass, from windows to lanterns and chandeliers. The mollusc abundantly grows within the muddy and brackish waters of the archipelago. Readily harvested, the use of capiz shells forms an important cultural asset for the Filipino people.

Gatip explores new interpretations of this material through a series of hanging installations and objects of light. Gatip reminisces on his roots and harnesses his childhood memories.

Capiz celebrates the uniqueness of capiz shells and draws on its rich history and future as a natural resource.
